  Hunting Birds

Hunting Upland Birds

The St. John Valley provides exciting opportunity to hunt ruffed grouse (or pa'tridge as we like to call them in Maine). You'll also encounter the quick and challenging woodcock. Hunts are planned according to your level of skill and activity, and will include some of the most productive (and challenging) alder, old-logging road and second-growth covers in the state.

Hunt over our trained German shorthaired pointer or you can also hunt over your own dog. If you've never bird hunted by dog you're in for a real treat! Plus, the beautiful foliage and comfortable weather makes October an absolute perfect time of year to enjoy a day in the woods.

Maine has daily bag limits on grouse and woodcock, so while it's a safe bet, there's no guarantee you'll get your limit but you can be sure of one thing... having lots of fun!

Hunting Waterfowl

Dewitt Davies and Gracie after a day's hunt

Our resident season is in September, with the migratory season starting in October. We have duck decoys which allow us to hunt where the ducks want to be. With light hunting pressure (only our guests hunt ducks and geese on the lake) and our large hunting area which includes the entire south east end of Eagle Lake, hunting remains good throughout the season. At any given time hundreds of ducks can be seen on the thoroughfares. The outlet of Fish River at Eagle Lake, and the Thoroughfare to Square Lake, has proven to be successful locations. From Mid-September through October flocks of ducks can be seen passing overhead toward these waters. We have mallards, blacks, wood ducks, mergansers, green wing teal, golden eye, ring neck, and Canada geese. Periodically, Snow Geese fly through the area and what a sight they are!.
